Madrid are set for a blockbuster clash with city rivals Atletico, and one of the key questions for manager Alonso has been whether Bellingham would start. The 22-year-old has been sidelined following a shoulder operation but has made a swift recovery, allowing him to return to the squad for the high-stakes derby at the Metropolitano. Bellingham has already made two substitute appearances this season, showing signs that he is regaining full fitness ahead of one of Madrid’s toughest tests.
The Enligsh midfielder spent much of the 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons struggling with a left shoulder dislocation, wearing strapping to manage the pain. His July surgery after Madrid’s elimination from the Club World Cup was initially expected to keep him out until late October. However, his early return now gives Alonso a major boost in midfield. With Los Blancos chasing a perfect record in La Liga and aiming to assert dominance in the Champions League, Bellingham’s versatility and attacking prowess could prove decisive. The derby also represents a litmus test for Alonso’s rotation strategy, balancing fitness, form, and squad depth.
Addressing the press at Real Madrid City ahead of the derby, Alonso confirmed Bellingham’s availability: “You already asked me that. Both Bellingham and [Eduardo] Camavinga can start.”
On the midfielder’s role, the Spanish coach added: “He’s an attacking midfielder. He can participate in both the build-up and the finish. He has the ability to cover a lot of ground. We have to get the most out of him so that he can be decisive. I need his flexibility and versatility. Some players are more static, and Jude is not one of them.”
With Madrid enjoying a flawless start to the 2025-26 season, Alonso will rely on Bellingham to add creativity and dynamism against Los Rojiblancos on Saturday. The England international’s return also provides depth ahead of upcoming Champions League fixtures, where Madrid will aim to maintain momentum in both domestic and European competitions.
