Inter coach Chivu has hailed young striker Pio Esposito’s all-around game after the 20-year-old earned a standing ovation during the club’s vital 2-1 victory over Sassuolo at San Siro. Chivu was delighted with the academy product’s contribution in what was his second consecutive Serie A start.
The Nerazzurri secured a much-needed three points on Sunday to end a run of two consecutive league defeats. A 14th-minute strike from Federico Dimarco and a late own goal from Tarik Muharemovic were enough for the hosts, despite a tense finish after Walid Cheddira pulled one back for Sassuolo on 84 minutes. The win lifts Inter into 10th place in the table after four games.
Speaking to DAZN Chivu praised the young forward’s maturity and impact, saying: “He gave a response on the field, both in Amsterdam [against Ajax in the Champions League] and tonight. Despite being so young, he handles the pressure well, he can also handle the physical duel on the pitch, and works hard for the team. I’m very pleased with how he is doing.”
The coach also noted his versatility and ability to complement his fellow strikers, adding: “The strikers complete each other… Pio can do a bit of everything: I’m happy for him.”
The victory provided welcome relief for Chivu, who admitted his side “really needed this” result after recent setbacks. Despite controlling the match with 20 shots, Inter were frustrated by an inspired performance from the Sassuolo goalkeeper and had to show resilience.
“We suffered to the end and that’s a good thing,” Chivu explained. “We showed character, determination, the right attitude, and there was some quality too.”
The match also saw Josep Martinez make his season debut in goal, resting first-choice Yann Sommer.
Following his bright start to life in the first team, Esposito will be aiming to cement his place in the starting XI as Inter look to build on this result. The club’s next fixtures will be crucial in their bid to climb the Serie A table and carry positive momentum into their ongoing Champions League campaign. They face Cagliari Calcio this weekend in the Serie A.
