Barcelona’s Goalkeeper Crisis: Ter Stegen Faces Back Surgery Setback
In a challenging turn for FC Barcelona, star goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen has announced his decision to undergo back surgery, sidelining him for an estimated three months. This development adds pressure to the club’s preparations for the new season, especially amid uncertainties surrounding the registration of new signing Joan Garcia.
Ter Stegen’s Emotional Announcement and Recovery Outlook
Having already endured a major knee issue that kept him out for a significant portion of the previous campaign, Ter Stegen is now confronting another health hurdle with this back procedure. In a heartfelt message shared online, he expressed his determination to return stronger, but the club could face goalkeeper shortages in the meantime.
“Dear Culers, I wear the colours and jersey of FC Barcelona with great pride, whether on or off the pitch, in moments of success and in difficult times.
“Today is a personally difficult day for me. Physically and athletically, I feel in very good shape, although unfortunately, I am not free from pain. After intensive discussions with the FC Barcelona medical team and external experts, the quickest and safest way for me to fully recover is through back surgery. After my last operation on my back, I returned to the pitch after 66 days-almost two months; this time, the doctors believe about three months will be necessary as a precaution, to avoid any risks. Emotionally, it hurts a lot not being able to support the team during this time. Fortunately, the rehabilitation is manageable and the road back is clear. I will keep you updated on my recovery and I sincerely want to thank you all, dear Culers, for always being by my side.
“Don’t worry – I’ll be back! Yours, Marc”
Impact on Barcelona’s Squad Depth
The team recently acquired Espanyol‘s Joan Garcia as a potential backup, but financial constraints have sparked concerns over his official registration. Ter Stegen’s absence might expedite this process, providing Barcelona with a much-needed option, though nothing has been finalized yet.
Navigating Financial Hurdles and Goalkeeper Options
Still operating beyond La Liga’s 1:1 financial rule-requiring that every euro invested in transfers be offset by equivalent income or salary reductions-Barcelona faces a tense period ahead. To bolster their roster, the club also relies on talents like Inaki Pena and the experienced Wojciech Szczesny. Recent updates indicate that as of 2023, Barcelona has managed to register key players under emergency provisions in similar injury scenarios, potentially setting a precedent for Garcia’s case.
